Exeterben 1834.; Cambridgeben tanult s 1871 óta East Merseyben (Colchester
mellett) lelkészkedik. Számos és részben igen terjedelmes épületes munkán és
teologiai művön kivül (milyen p. Lives of the saints. 1872-77, 15 kötet)
nevezetesebb munkái: Jeeland, its scenes and sagas (1864), Myths of the middle
ages (1867. 2 köt.), Curiositíes of olden times (1869), The silver store
(versek, 1868), The book of werewolves (1865), The origin and development of
religions belief (vallásbölcseleti mű, 1869-70, 2 kötet), In exitu Israel
(regény a francia forradalomból, 1870), Yorkshire oddities (1874; 2 köt.) stb.
