János, angol iró, szül. Londonban 1807 márc. 11., megh. ugyanott 1878 jan. 25. Német- és Franciaországban tanult s már 1824. megirta Justice or the Venetian jew c. melodrámáját. 1841-1852. a Church and State Gazette s az Athenaeum szerkesztője volt. Első nagyobb munkája: History and antiquities of the borough and town of Reading in Berkshire (1835); ezután következtek: Filia dolorosa, memoirs of the duchess of Angouleme (Mrs. Romerrel együtt 1852); Life of Dr. Edw. Joung (1854); Habits and men (1855); Lives of the queens of England of the house of Hannover (1855-1875); Knights and their Days (1856); Monarchs retired from business (1857); A history of coursfools (1858); New pictures and old panels (1859); A book of the princes of Wales (1860); A memoir of Queen Adelaide (1856); Their Majesties servants (1864, 1888); Saints and sinners (1868); A lady of the last century (Mrs Elizabeth Montague) illustrated in her unpublished letters (1873); London in Jacobite times (1877-1879); Memoirs of our great towns (1878); In and about Drury Lane (1881), mindannyi igen kedvelt olvasmány. Szerkesztette a nagyon elterjedt Notes and Queries c. hetilapot is.
