Fiske

(ejtsd: fiszk) János, angol történetiró és bölcselő, született Hartfordban (Connecticut) 1842 márc. 30. Korán hiressé tette nevét előadásaival, melyeket Bostonban, Londonban és Edinburgban tartott. Ezek közül nevezetesebbek: The desting of man, viewed in the light of his origin (Boston 1884) és The idea of God, as affected by modern knowledge (u. o. 1885). Egyéb nevezetesebb bölcseleti művei: Myths and myths-makers (u. o. 1872); Outlines of cosmic philosophy (2 köt., u. o. 1875); The unseen world (u. o. 1876); Darwinism (London és New-York 1879). Történelmi munkái közül, melyek valamennyien lelkiismeretes forrástanulmányon alapulnak, ezeket említjük: The critical period of American history (Boston 1888); The beginnings of New England (London 1889); The discovery of America (2 köt., u. o. 1892).
