Huxley

(ejtsd: hökszli) Tamás Henrik, angol természetbuvár, szül. Londonban 1825 máj. 4. Eleinte orvos volt, de egy Owen Stanley kapitánnyal Ausztrália északi és keleti forrásvidékei tájékán tett utazása arra késztette, hogy zoologus legyen. Ez utazásának eredménye On the oceanic Hydrozoa cimü (1859) hires munkája volt. 1855. H. a Royal Institutionban a fiziologia és a londoni bányász-iskolában az állattan tanára lett. 1862. a Royal College of Surgeons intézetben az összehasonlító boncolástan és a fiziologia tanárává nevezték ki. H. mindinkább a gerinces állatok és az ember tanulmányozásával kezdett foglalkozni. Ez időtájt irta hirneves munkáinak egész sorát, igy Evidence as to man"s place in nature (3 kiad., London 1864) c. művét is.
