(ejtsd: vittne), 1. Josia Dwight, amerikai geologus, szül. Northamptonban (Massachusetts) 1819 nov. 20. Tanulmányait a Yale Collegeben végezte, azután mint vegyész működött Philadelphiában, 1840-42. részt vett New-Hampshire állam geologiai fölmérésben. 1842-47. Európában tanult, 1855. állami vegyész és tanár Iowában, 1860-74. állami geologus Kaliforniában. 1875. a geologia tanára a Harvard Collegen. Nevezetesebb munkái: Use of the blowpipe (Boston 1845); The metallic wealth of the United States, described and compared with that of other countries (1854); Reports on the geological survey of California (12 köt., 1864-84); The climatic changes of later geological times (1880-1882); The United States, Facts and figures illustrating the physical geography of the county and its material resources (1889); The United States, Population immigration and irrigation (1894).

2. W Vilmos Dwight, amerikai szánszkrit nyelvész, szül. Northamptonban 1827 febr. 9., megh. 1894 jun. 7. Eleinte a Yale-collegeben, aztán 1850-1853. a tübingai és berlini egyetemeken tanult Boppot, Webert és Lepsiust hallgatva. 1854. a Yale-collegeben a szánszkrit nyelv tanára lett. Három ágában az ind tudománynak szerzett magának érdemeket, u. m. a véda-kutatás, az ind csillagászat és a nyelvtanban. Ő volt Amerika legnagyobb nyelvtudósa. Főbb művei: Text of the Atharva-Veda (Berlin 1856, Rothtal együtt); Surya-Siddhauta, a text book of Hindu astronomy (Boston 1860); Language and the study of languages (New-York és London 1867, németül Jollytól, München 1874); German grammar (New-York 1869); German reader with notes and vocabulary (u. o. 1870); Oriental and linguistic studies (u. o. 1872-74, 2 köt.); The life and growth of language (u. o. 1875); Sanskrit grammar, vedic and classical (Lipcse 1879, 3. kiad. u. o. 1896), mely valóságos forradalmat idézett elő a szánszkrit nyelvtanítás terén; Roots, verb forms and primary derivatives of Sanskrit (u. o. 1885). Sajtó alatt van mint a Harvard Oriental Series IV. és V. kötete The Atharva Veda Sanhita, translated into English, with a full critical and exegetical commentary.
