Ryhs, angol orientalista, szül. Colchesterben 1843 május 12. 1863-65. Boroszlóban Stenzler tanár vezetése alatt a szanszkritot tanulta, 1866 Celjmbe ment, hol angol polgári szolgálatba lépett. Visszatérve Angliába, 1876. Barrister, 1883. a pali és a buddhista irodalom tanára lett a londoni University Collegeben, 1887. pedig a Royal Asiatic Society titkára, 1882. a Palis Tex Society-t alapította. Munkái: Ancient coins and measures of Ceylon (London 1877); Buddhist birth stories (u. o. 1880); Lectures on the origin and growth of religion an illustrated by Indian buddhism (u. o. 1881); Buddhism (u. o. 1878); Vinaya texts (Oldenberggel együtt. Berlin Oxf. 1881-85); Buddhist Suttas (u. o. 1881); The questions of King Milinda (u. o. 1889). Kiadványai: a Sumangala és a Digha Nikarcircumflexya buddhista munkák.
