(ejtsd: szvit) Henrik, angol nyelvtudós, szül. 1845 szept. 15. Az oxfordi egyetemen tanult s főleg a hangfiziologiával foglalkoztt. Oxfordban magister artium lett, a heidelbergai egyetem tiszteletbeli filozofiai doktottá, a glasgowi egyetem tiszteletbeli jogi doktorrá nevezte ki. Fő művei: Anglo-Saxon reader (6. kiad. Oxford 1889); Anglo-Saxon primer (3. kiad. u. o. 1883); First middle English primer (u. o. 1884); Second middle English primer (u. o. 1886); Alfred"s version of Gregory"s pastoral care (London 1871); Alfred"s Orosius (u. o. 1883); The oldest English texts (u. o. 1885); Facsimile of the Epinal glossary (u. o. 1883); Handbook of phonetics (Oxford 1887); History of English sound (2. kiad. u. o. 1888); Primer of phonetics (u. o. 1890); Elementarbuch des gesprochenen Englisch (2. kiad. u. o. 1886); Primer of spoken English (u. o. 1890); Icelandic primer (u. o. 1886); The students dictionary of Anglo-Saxon (u. o. 1897).
